British Rail reserved the TOPS classification 97 for departmental locomotives which were used for special or engineering duties. They were mainly several classes of locomotives which were lumped together for numbering purposes, many Class 97's were converted from redundant locomotives, whilst others were purpose built. In 2008, Network Rail once again used the Class 97 classification for signalling test locomotives and were classified as 97/3's (97301 - 97304).
